Leeghwaterbad chooses sustainable water disinfection with hybrid salt electrolysis

Municipality of Purmerend, Spurd, Leeghwaterbad, Purmerend

January – March 2025

Hybrid salt electrolysis, sustainable water disinfection, chlorine reduction, swimming pool sustainability, water quality improvement

The Leeghwaterbad in Purmerend is the first swimming pool in North Holland and the second in the Netherlands to use a hybrid salt electrolysis system. This innovative solution from VDH watertechnology replaces traditional chlorine dosing and contributes to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable swimming environment. The Leeghwaterbad is part of Spurd, an organisation committed to sport, physical activity, and a healthy lifestyle in Purmerend. The swimming pool plays an important role in this mission as a place where recreation and movement come together.

The original situation: traditional chlorine storage

Until early 2025, the Leeghwaterbad – like many swimming pools – used traditional disinfection with chlorine and acid dosing, stored in large tanks. With the introduction of the new Environment and Planning Act (BAL15) on 1 January 2024, the requirements for swimming water quality were tightened. Swimming pools must now meet stricter standards, making it increasingly challenging to maintain optimal water quality.

The goal: sustainability and local chlorine production

The Municipality of Purmerend set the goal of making the Leeghwaterbad more sustainable while improving water quality. The transition to salt electrolysis stems from Spurd’s environmental and sustainability ambitions. With this forward-looking choice, Spurd invests in a cleaner and more efficient method of disinfection, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable swimming environment.

The VDH solution: hybrid salt electrolysis installation

The solution? The hybrid salt electrolysis installation from VDH watertechnology, combining membrane and open-cell technology. This innovative system reduces disinfection by-products and lowers chlorine levels. It is also water-saving: improved water quality means less water needs to be refreshed per visitor, resulting in a cleaner, safer and more sustainable disinfection process. A back-up system ensures water quality remains guaranteed in case of malfunction.

CHLORINSITU® as your solution

Do you manage a swimming pool, wellness center, or tropical water park? Then you need the purest and safest form of disinfection. We have the solution.

The CHLORINSITU® is a membrane cell electrolysis system that produces sodium hypochlorite on site.

Ideal for swimming pools that demand top performance in water quality and swimming comfort.

Step 1:
R&D Design

From ambition to a concrete plan

The Municipality of Purmerend started the project with a clear objective: the Leeghwaterbad had to become more sustainable and comply with the stricter requirements of the Environment and Planning Act. The municipality issued a public tender, in which VDH was selected for its most innovative approach.

During this phase, VDH worked closely with Spurd to thoroughly analyse the swimming pool. This included reviewing current water consumption, pool load, existing chlorine storage, and the technical plant room.

Step 2:
Production - Test - Expedition

Confidence through validation

Before installation, the solution was extensively tested. VDH simulated peak loads, calculated expected savings, and validated the performance of the hybrid technology. This gave Spurd confidence that this innovative approach was not only sustainable, but also demonstrably better for both visitors and staff.

A smooth transition without disruption
Step 3:
Installation

A smooth transition without disruption

A carefully planned project schedule and close cooperation between VDH and the SPURD project team ensured that visitors hardly noticed the work. The transition from traditional disinfection with ready-made hypochlorite to hybrid in-situ salt electrolysis was carried out smoothly and in a controlled manner, while maintaining full pool operations.

Step 4:
Service & Result

Savings on energy and water, resulting in lower annual costs

The Leeghwaterbad is a major consumer of heat and electricity. Spurd Director Jancor de Boer explains: “The investment in sustainable hybrid salt electrolysis contributes to lower energy and water consumption and reduces freight traffic for the delivery of liquid chlorine to the swimming pool. For salt delivery, less than half the number of truck movements is required compared to chlorine.”
